All dogs can benefit but dog massage should especially be considered in the following situations:

  • Elderly Dogs with arthritis & compromised joints through hip/elbow dysplasia.
  • Stay at home pooch who isn’t getting on and off the sofa with such ease anymore.
  • Middle age dogs who are starting to slow down and show signs of stiffness and dog joint pain.
  • Dogs who are post injury and rehabilitating.
  • Working / Sporting dogs who could benefit from a tune up to maintain tip top condition.
  • Exuberant puppies who have overextended through jumping/running
  • Anxious and reactive dogs who need balance in their nervous system

Benefits of massage

I use a combination of clinical canine massage techniques from Galen Therapy Centre alongside the holistic approach of Whole Energy Body Balance to help your dog with their movement and mobility.

Physical benefits:

  • Pain Relief: Massage reduces inflammation, releasing muscle tension, and triggering the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.
  • Reduced Muscle Tension and Stiffness: By targeting knots and tight areas, massage helps relax muscles and remove fascia adhesions which leads to improved flexibility, and range of motion.
  • Improved Circulation: Massage techniques enhance blood flow, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues and remove waste products such as inflammation. This improved circulation can aid in faster recovery from injuries and reduce swelling.
  • Enhanced Immune Function: Some studies suggest that massage can boost the immune system by increasing the activity of natural killer cells and improving lymphatic drainage, which helps the body fight off infections.
  • Better Sleep Quality: By promoting relaxation and reducing pain and anxiety, massage can contribute to improved sleep patterns.
  • Rebalance Nervous System: Massage stimulates the neural pathways reprogramming the body and greatly improves the range of movement.
  • Improved Sporting Performance: More fluid movement due to removal of fascia restrictions and muscle tensions, maximising their athletic potential and preventing future potential injuries or pain.

Mental and Emotional Benefits:

  • Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Using the skin as a conduit it stimulates the nervous system resulting in reduction of stress hormones. Massage is known to lower levels of cortisol, while increasing the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine.
  • Release Trauma:   Easing painful and constricted fascia and can also release past mental, physical, and emotional traumas.
  • Improved Mood: The release of endorphins, reduction in pain and the overall relaxation experienced during a massage can elevate mood and reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
  • Increased Relaxation: Massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the "rest and digest" response, leading to deep relaxation.
  • Heightened Mental Alertness: While promoting relaxation, massage can also improve focus and mental clarity in some individuals.

Case Studies for Canine Massage

Bill

Bill

Bill

"My dog Bill loves Katy - he was struggling a little with anxiety and is quite a reactive dog - we were amazed at how quickly he relaxed as Katy worked with him. By the end of the canine massage session he was fast asleep and has been much more relaxed since.

Katy has also shown me some massage techniques so I can soothe his anxiety which helps us bond even more"

Bella

Bill

Bill

"Bella enjoyed 3 canine massage sessions with Katy. She had a relaxed manner straight after the sessions, and her initial stiffness before walking seems to have improved as well."

Skye

Bill

Skye

"Skye trains and competes in agility, so canine massage is perfect to help maintain her condition and performance. In addition to treating Skye regularly for maintenance Katy has shown me warm-up and cool-down massage techniques I can use at agility to help prevent injury and stiffness.

Skye can be quite wary but Katy is great at reading body language to assess when Skye might be feeling a bit anxious, so the treatment is always tailored to make Skye comfortable.”
